The application fields of aluminum profiles include national defense, aerospace, construction, electric power, communications, automobiles, medical (aluminum barrels, aluminum bottles, etc.) and daily necessities.
Architecture and Construction
Such applications range from railings and balustrades to building facades and stands. Robust and lightweight aluminium profiles are ideal for applications such as canopies where the structure is not heavy but must withstand the load. (High stiffness means you need less material, which means less weight.) It's also used in suspended ceilings and walls.
It can be a bit difficult to include it in a building, but many ladders are made from aluminum extrusions.
display screen
Almost every booth you've seen at a trade show or exhibition is constructed of extruded materials. That's because extruded sections can be designed to interlock the parts, making assembly quick and easy. It's also easy to move around and can be done in a variety of ways for an attractive and durable look.
Likewise, point-of-sale displays, picture frames, and display cases are other examples of aluminum extrusions used for display.
Electrical System
Because it is a good conductor, extruded aluminum is sometimes used for busbars and related electrical equipment. Another application is lighting. Especially modern LED luminaires can face thermal management challenges. Extruded aluminum with fins makes a great radiator or heat exchanger, is easy to install and color, and won't be too heavy for overhead installations.
A third electrical example is the use of aluminum extrusions in photovoltaic (solar) panel support structures. These require strength and corrosion resistance, combined with low quality, especially in the case of roof mounted panels.
industrial
Walk through any factory, including ours, and you'll almost certainly see aluminum extrusions in action. It is the material of choice for equipment such as workbenches, inspection tables and carts because it is easy to cut and drill, lightweight yet stiff, and offers good value for money. It also has the added appeal of scalability: if the workbench needs to be modified, it's done quickly.
In the same factory, you will often see extrusions used to make machine guard frames. It snaps together quickly and Lexan panels can be installed to provide a clear view while protecting those working nearby.
transportation
Weight and lightweighting are big issues in transportation. Aerospace is an obvious example, but there are also automotive applications such as trailers. Keeping the trailer weight low allows the tractor to use more torque to haul items and less torque to move the trailer itself.
For the same reason, aluminum extrusion is widely used in RVs. Plus it won't rust and can be sanded almost like chrome, so it's also great for decorating.
