Aluminum Square Tube Applications

Due to its light weight, aluminum tubes provide greater tube volume per unit weight than steel. Many products benefit from using lighter tubing, especially those that require some degree of mobility, such as wheelchairs and outdoor furniture. Aluminum tubes also don't tarnish and are more receptive to paint and other trim than other metals, enhancing its aesthetics.

Aluminum conducts heat very well, making aluminum tubing ideal for applications that rely on temperature control, including refrigerators, solar and air conditioning systems. Additionally, applications such as hydraulic systems, fuel lines, frames and racks benefit from the light weight and durability of aluminum tubing.

Aluminum comes in several different alloys. Aluminum forms strong alloys with various combinations of magnesium and silicon. In particular, aluminum square tube alloy 6061 is used by manufacturers for many medium to high strength applications because of its higher weldability and excellent corrosion resistance. 6061 aluminum square tube is also easy to anodize, and its properties make it ideal for heat treatment. It is also the cheapest aluminum tube alloy available.

Manufacturers also use Aluminum Square Tube alloy 6063 for an extremely smooth surface finish. Because it is only about half as strong as aluminum alloy 6061, aluminum alloy 6063 is often found in applications where aesthetics are more important than strength. This material still has many of the same anodizing capabilities as aluminum alloy 6061. 6063 aluminum square tubing is easy to weld, cut and machine, so it is frequently used in gates, handrails, frame work, support columns, protective barriers and fencing.
